This is a video of a talk that high school math teacher, Dan Meyer, gave to illustrate how he teaches math in relation to the real world. In another video (which you can find on Youtube, should you wish to view it) he suggests that presenting students with a real world problem to solve should allow math to serve conversation, debate, and discussion rather than the other way around. This is what I would like to do in the classroom and I would challenge parents and guardians to do the same outside of the classroom. It really serves to engage the students in math!
